Reading Practices

LITERATURE

(LITERATURE and/or ENGLISH is compulsory. Students may do both or either in order to meet VCAA requirements. It is highly recommended that a full sequence of 1, 2, 3 & 4 units is completed.)

Rationale

The study of literature focuses on the enjoyment and appreciation of reading that arises from discussion, debate and the challenge of exploring the meanings of literary texts. Students reflect on their interpretations and those of others.

Structure

The study is made up of four units. Each unit deals with specific content and is designed to enable students to achieve a set of outcomes. Each outcome is described in terms of key knowledge and skills.

Entry

There are no prerequisites for entry to Units 1, 2 and 3. Students must undertake Unit 3 prior to undertaking Unit 4. Units 1 to 4 are designed to a standard equivalent to the final two years of secondary education. All VCE studies are benchmarked against comparable national and international curriculum.

Unit 1:  Approaches to Literature

  • Ideas and concerns in texts

OUTCOMES

1. On completion of this unit the student should be able to respond to a range of texts and reflect on influences shaping these responses.

2. On completion of this unit the student should be able to analyse the ways in which a selected text reflects or comments on the ideas and concerns of individuals and particular groups in society.

Unit 2:  Context and Connections

Areas Of Study

  • The text, the reader and their contexts
  • Exploring connections between texts

OUTCOMES

1 On completion of this unit the student should be able to analyse and respond critically and creatively to the ways a text from a past era and/or different culture reflect or comment on the ideas and concerns of individuals and groups in that context.

2 On completion of this unit the student should be able to compare texts considering the dialogic nature of texts and how they influence each other.

Considering alternative viewpoints

Unit 3:  Literature

Areas of Study

  • Adaptations and transformations
  • Creative responses to texts

OUTCOMES

On completion of this unit the student should be able to analyse the extent to which meaning changes when a text is adapted to a different form.

On completion of this unit the student should be able to respond creatively to a text and comment on the connections between the text and the response.

Unit 4:  Literature

Areas Of Study

  • Literary perspectives
  • Close analysis

OUTCOMES 

On completion of this unit  students should be able to produce an interpretation of a text using different literary perspectives to inform their view.

On completion of this unit the student should be able to analyse features of texts and develop and justify interpretations of texts.
